Grove Theatre Celebrating Drama Competition

The Grove Theatre are delighted to announce the winner of our 'Celebrating Drama' Competition. Congratulations to Iris from Potters Bar who has won a year long platinum friend’s membership.

Take a read of Iris' brilliant short story below:

He leant on the bar, his weight arched over the pint he’d been nursing all evening. Eyes lifted warily, he stared at the ghost of himself reflected in the smoke – stained mirror framed in half filled bottles, his only drinking companions now.

He had loved once, he had stood proud, the captain of another’s heart. This bleary eyed figure with the unkempt hair she had run her fingers through that hair, her scarlet nails, drawing deep into the dark, dark locks. As dark as your pint shed laughed and they’d tumbled and kissed and he had been loved.

”Any empties?”

“No”

He cradled the tall glass in his broad palms. No Empties, empty would be a fine thing, to feel the last drop of care fall from his grip, to open up his fingers and let it all go, now that would be a fine thing. But a glass half empty has another name too and the pain is just the shadow to the joy and the hope that brings.

He would take another drink and call out for another pint and tomorrow he’d be there again and he’d drink his fill again and drown himself once more in the drama of his life, a small tale, but his own.

Good luck!

The tale of The Ghost and Mrs Muir was written in 1945 by Josephine Leslie (aka R. A. Dick) and later made into a film starring Gene Tierney, Rex Harrison and George Sanders. This revived stage version is both written and directed by Patric Kearns, who also recently adapted James Hilton’s classic novel, Random Harvest.

Strong-willed widow Lucy Muir goes to live in Gull Cottage by the British seaside, even though it appears to be haunted. Sure enough, that very night she meets the ghost of crusty former owner Captain Gregg. Refusing to be scared off they become friends and allies, after Lucy gets used to the idea of a man’s ghost haunting her bedroom. But when a charming live man comes courting, Lucy and the captain must deal with their feelings for each other.

The production received high praise whilst touring at the end of last year and, having recently been revived for another mini-tour, has had similar success.

The Grove’s General Manager Jo Ditch said ‘We are very excited to have The Ghost and Mrs Muir with us this month. We are often asked to offer the community more drama and we are delighted to be able to provide a play of such a high quality as this.’

Don’t miss your chance to see this thought-provoking play which runs at the Grove Theatre from Thursday 23rd – Saturday 25th June.

The Society of Theatre Consultants chose the International Theatre Engineering and Architecture Conference in London as the occasion to present their 2010 awards for ‘Design Excellence’, and Theatreplan was just ‘pipped to the post’ with its design for the Grove Theatre at Dunstable.
